All massive and crew - TONITE none less than GENERAL DEGREE is gonna rock Ready 2 Rumble's event called "Old time something / come back again!" at club Camera, Vienna.

Born in Manchester (Jamaica) on April 28, Degree often had to hide as a child from his strict christian parents in order to get a taste of what was happening on the airwaves. It was only a few years later in his early 20's, that Degree was hitting those same airwaves with his brilliant imitation of a grandmother in his first number one hit 'Granny'- his first recording for Main Street producer Danny Browne. 'Granny' reigned in the dances and charts for one year straight, and that humorous vine has thrived throughout Degree's career and is a component he naturally possesses.

Degree's impressive parade of number one hits continued both at home and abroad, and lends great credence to the fact that he certainly does know what he's talking about. Tunes such as 'Granny, Brinks, Mr Dweet Nice, Bodyguard, Papa Lover,  Hold Yuh Tonight, Spark plug and countless others have had fans skanking.

General Degree is also renowned for his provocative lyrics that always leave just enough up to the imagination. The little they do leave, is also plenty for them not to be certified XXX-rated. Girls crying for his 'Pianist' is the perfect example of a Degree double-entendre, that gets his earthy message across whilst leaving the censors with nothing to do. The reason why Degree's suggestiveness works so well is because of the pure invention in his work. It's a trademark that ensures no two Degree's tunes sound similar, even if the subject matter might be. Always vocally ambidextrous on a rhythm, his spoken voice lingers at double bass.  Reflecting this, the 1998 smash "Bag a Tings" has become the blueprint for an almost monotone flow that has been utilized by many deejays since.

'Cartoon Character', 'Traffic Blocking', 'Boom Boom' among others, kept the artiste on the charts and satisfied his fans appetite for more of the 'Bush Baby'- which happened to be the title track of the album for which he copped a Reggae Soca Award for best dancehall album.

Being often described as a "consistent" DJ, Degree's has entered the 21st century with new ideas and a slew of new hits. Tracks like 'My Girls' 'Inna', 'Man Shortage', 'Bounce Somebody' and most recently 'The Specialist' have proven his consistency, and are doing well both locally and on the international market.

Not to be outdone by the young bloods in the business, Degree's has and will continue to rank among the best, and has pledged to maintain and continue contributing to the development and success of dancehall music.

WTF is TROPICAL BASS?
(This blog entry is exceptionally in German language, Sorry)

Wie wenn es nicht schon schwierig genug wäre, die bestehenden Musikrichtungen in Schubladen zu stecken. Wie sinnvoll das überhaupt ist, sei dahingestellt - ich bin für die Benennung von unterschiedlichen Genres.

Im Informationszeitalter und in einer globalisierten Welt kommen im Sekundentakt neue Nummern (vor allem elektronischer Natur) auf den Online Markt oder sogar als Free Download. Egal ob ein Kwaito-Produzent aus Johannesburg oder ein Moombah-Deejay aus der Dominikanischen Republik, Musikszenen und Subkulturen werden zunehmend zu einem globalen Phänomen.



Junge Menschen gibt es ja zum Glück überall (und überall weitaus mehr als in der westlichen Welt) und der Zugang zu Computern und somit auch virtuellen Soundstudios wird immer breitenwirksamer. Somit hat ein kleiner Kuduro-Produzent aus Angola immer mehr Möglichkeiten den selbst kreierten Sound in die große weite Welt zu schießen. Und das ist auch gut so - woran sich europäische/nordamerikanische Produktionen von denen des globalen Südens unterscheiden ist hauptsächlich die Qualität des Masterings. Aber auch dies wird durch Weltbürger wie Diplo von Major Lazer und seinem Label MAD DECENT verbessert, der sich als globalisierter Talent-Scout, Producer und Botschafter von "Neuer elektronischer Welttanzmusik" oder eben auch TROPICAL BASS mit allen möglichen Abwandlungen sieht.



Menschen tanzen also auch auf der ganzen Welt zu unterschiedlichsten Rhythmen mit unterschiedlichen Tonsystemen, andersartigen Instrumenten und in verschiedensten Sprachen. Was früher (und auch heute noch in Plattenläden oder Musikredaktionen) als "Weltmusik" bekannt war (wobei da hauptsächlich westliche Produzenten und Musiker bestimmend waren), ist durch die elektronische Variante des TROPICAL BASS entgültig salonfähig geworden.

In den Staaten stürmen Tropical Bass Künstler wie zB M.I.A. und auch andere unbekanntere Artists die Mainstream Charts und bei uns in Europa bevölkert es leider nach wie vor nur ein Nischenprogramm. Die Qualität und Aktualität der meisten Produktionen ist außerordentlich professionell und die DJ's bemühen sich um eine unvergessliche, abwechslungsreiche und absolut feierbare Selection die zumal mit futuristischen Effekten und oft auch MC's noch bis zum tropischen Platzen aufgefettet wird.



Das Problem was uns als Deejays, Promoter und Produzenten dieses neuen, innovativen und absolut zukunftsträchtigen, globalen und diversen Musikgenre belastet, ist die Tatsache, dass viele unserer lokalen Zeitgenossen einfach nichts von ihrem Glück wissen. Das Genre ist hierzulande leider in einer Nische gelandet und hat sich fairerweise mehr Massive, mehr Airplay und mehr Aufmerksamkeit verdient.

Deshalb werden wir auf diesem Blog immer wieder von Entwicklungen und Events im Bereich TROPICAL BASS berichten, um euch einen würdevollen Einblick und Zugang zum neuen, durchaus interessanten und sich mit vielen unterschiedlichen Einflüssen befruchtenden Style zu ermöglichen.



Den Anfang wird die Hamburger DJ/Producer-Combo SO SHIFTY machen, die sich in der Szene schon etabliert haben und durch ihre frischen Tunes wieder neues Leben in die europäische Clubszene blasten.

Speech Debelle who comes from South London with Jamaican heritage in my opinion got one of the sweetest voices and the poetic lyrics seem to let her heart speak... straight!
Her debut album is called "Speech Therapy" and is a little lyrical masterpiece and balm for your mind, heart & soul. On that she also collaborated with artists like Roots Manuva or Wayne Lotek and shared quality studio time with live musicians.

This year she released another LP called "Freedom of Speech" and it is amazing! Now lean back, relax and check the video from the first album track called "Studio Backpack Rap"... Enjoy and cya tonite!

FREE YAAMAICA REPUBLIC

All Reggae and street culture loving people who came across Berlin should already know a place called YAAM next to the Spree river and East Side Gallery. Colorful graffiti and street art is decorating the old industrial brick building. Yaamaica Republic is like a downtown oasis in concrete Berlin jungle. You can just hang around at the beach and listen to some deejays juggeling or play streetball, beach volleyball, soccer, kiss the miniramp. For the thirsty and hungry ones who come after work they serve good african dish and orrriginal Jamaican jerk. Plus whole heap of different drinks best enjoyed at the Cool Runnings bar...

Since 1997 (before it was placed in a different location / Cuvrystr) it has evolved to the biggest and most exciting location in terms of Reggae/Dancehall/HipHop and many many more different bashments in town. The biggest artists in any kind of Bass business have shared their indoor and outdoor stage and annually a big festival is taking place during Karneval der Kulturen.
Now it's up to us to make history and SIGN the ONLINE PETITION in order to keep YAAM alive!

They are facing troubles since quiet a while due to the Mediaspree projects who want to transform the whole lovely riverbank into a big corporate enterprise complex. People stood up and kept on fighting against this monster of predatory capitalism. Demonstrations and rallies out in the streets could still not frighten those commercial estate sharks from trying to invest in this beautiful property...

So please family, help to keep this unique art&culture&sports location alive! It is a very family-friendly place offering awesome programs for the young & the old, the rich & the poor - a peaceful place where TOLERANCE is written in big letters and all kinds of people are treated with respect.
